Free radicals , the evil upon us

Hey guys , how are you doing? I hope you are all fine, because I am great! On my last post I wrote about how I want to bring awareness to cancer or ways to prevent it from developing (read here! ).

We can´t talk about cancer without talking about free radicals, these are the origin of all evil ( or almost all ) when it comes to disease.

But , what are free radicals?

One thing you have to know is that radicals have always existed in our body, but their discovery is relatively recently, all ongoing investigations, and these have advanced with new solutions in order to prevent and treat many diseases.

Free radicals are fragments of highly useless molecules that destroy the structure and integrity of healthy cells, leading to degenerative diseases and premature aging. free radicals are by-products of cellular metabolism, which result from the so-called oxidative process.

Oxidative process and how it works

In every living organism occurs the production of free radicals daily, of the total oxygen that is breathed daily, 5% becomes free radicals, which are not entirely harmful to the body. When produced in moderate amounts, free radicals fight bacteria and viruses present in the body, and metabolism produces numerous substances to neutralize them but, when overproduced free radicals become harmful because they damage healthy cells and increase the risk of developing serious diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases (Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s), cataracts, arthritis and cognitive dysfunctions, neurological disorders and premature aging.

What are the external factors that enhance the excessive production of free radicals?

Excess can be caused by situations that lead to physical wear and tear, such as environmental pollution, exposure to sunlight, stress, cigarette use, a sedentary lifestyle and high-fat, sugar and alcohol-rich food or low in vitamins and minerals, humidity, high temperatures, intense physical activity (since there is a large increase in oxygen consumption by the body , this leads to the release of more free radicals), your emotional state can also be a factor, so avoid stress.

But do not be alarmed , there is a solution for everything in life, as important as it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle, it is also important to to ensure the presence of a barrier in the body that protects it against the aggressiveness of external factors that can lead to degenerative processes. One of the ways to reduce this effect , are antioxidants, this is a defense strategy that was developed for cells to deal with oxygen toxicity.
